About the Center
The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at Northeastern University was created in the College of Arts & Sciences to act as a resource and umbrella for the undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary programs in the College. Through the Center, the College of Arts and Sciences offers students the opportunity to study in a broad range of interdisciplinary programs suited to their curricular or career objectives and also permits students to design their own independent programs of study. The Center is a resource for students who want to obtain more information about the various interdisciplinary programs at the Center, apply for interdisciplinary scholarship opportunities, join our affiliated academics organizations, and participate in our innovative community partnerships.
The Center also supports and coordinates the individual programs. The Center assists the programs with brochure and website development, by scheduling new courses, hiring interdisciplinary faculty, creating linkages between the programs, developing new programs and courses, and event coordination.
Our Programs
There are approximately 22 interdisciplinary programs within the College of Arts and Sciences and negotiations are ongoing to develop new undergraduate programs, such as Russian Studies, Cultural Studies, Leadership Studies, and a graduate certificate in Computation and Visualization. The interdisciplinary programs of the College of Arts and Sciences are freestanding majors, dual majors, and/or minors and concentrations. This vast array permits students the flexibility:
- to design their interdisciplinary studies.
- to complete full or abbreviated (as with dual majors) department-based majors.
- to stand alone as major areas of study.
- to explore the boundaries at the cutting edge of existing disciplines to explore areas of secondary or personal interest while preparing for a career path either in Arts & Sciences or in one of the professional colleges at Northeastern.
