The Graduate Certificate in Cinema Studies in unique in the Boston area in that it emphasizes film theory and criticism. It is intended as a complement to existing M.A. and PhD programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students take four electives from the list in addition to the required introductory course in Film Studies (ENG 3612). Hands-on production experience is offered in two of the electives: HST 3625 and JRN 3424. Students pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Cinema Studies can profit from Northeastern's placement in Boston, with its many film festivals, art house venues for film exhibition, and active filmmaking scene.

Note: Students must be enrolled in an MA or Ph.D. program in one of the following departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in order to qualify for the Cinema Studies Certificate: Education, English, History, Journalism, or Sociology.
