The Women's Studies Program provides women and men at Northeastern with an opportunity to examine the diversity of human experience through the perspectives of women. Students examine gender roles in the United States and around the world; how they developed and why they are changing; as well as how ideas about gender shape the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences.

Undergraduates can work toward a minor in women's studies. In this course of study, students examine gender stereotypes, the various ways ideas about gender and sexuality have developed, and the changing situation for women and men today. Students also learn about cross-cultural differences in gender roles. In a addition, you scrutinize women's contributions to world history, cultural, and politics, and discuss the changing nature of women's role today. The requirements for a minor in Women's Studies include two interdisciplinary courses and five elective courses.

Both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty, learning by actively participating in gender research. Key questions are posed that change how people see the world: How does gender influence the kinds of questions we can ask of the world around us? What information can become data when you use gender as a central part of examining a problem? The Women's Studies program coordinated the Boston Area Colloquium on Feminist Theory lecture series, sponsors talks by scholars on campus, produce the Working Papers in Gender Studies Series, and sponsors the Visiting Research Scholars in Women's Studies Series. Women's Studies also works closely with the independent, student-run Women's Center to sponsor programs for Women's History Month and other events of special concern to Women's Studies.
