The Dr. Ruth E. Sullivan Memorial Fund was established at Northeastern University in 1976 to honor the memory and academic excellence of this extraordinary interdisciplinary teacher and scholar. Income from this fund will be awarded annually and in perpetuity to recognize and reward undergraduate excellence in interdisciplinary studies.

By interdisciplinary studies, we mean that candidates will be judged on the quality of their work at the intersection of two or more branches of learning; that is, in disciplines not traditionally considered to be closely related. Examples could be psychology and literature, religion and anthropology, mathematics and philosophy. Possible combinations are numerous. We do not mean that "multidisciplinary" is the presence of a double major, or a major and a minor. When evaluating applications the committee looks for creativity, originality, and focus in the student's program of study. As part of the application, the student must provide a clear and persuasive account of his or her interdisciplinary pursuit, and how the various disciplines come together to create a unique approach to their studies. This statement is the most important part of the application.

Students must have begun work that indicates an ability to study the intersection of the disciplines chosen. Nominees for the Sullivan Scholarship should be seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences with a minimum cumulative quality point average of 3.4 and a minimum of 52 semester hours in residence at Northeastern University.
